Lewis Hamilton to tie up BBC Sports Personality of the Year?

The star studded Sports Personality of the Year event is currently taking place at the Birmingham NEC. All gentlemen present pay their respect to the awards ceremony by wearing ties. Yet another example of the power of the necktie!

Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton is clear favourite to win the award this year, having finished second in his debut season in the sport. Other contenders include boxers, Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe.

Gary Lineker presents, sporting black striped tie.

Simon Pegg - The real winner at British Comedy Awards?

Controversy has surrounded this year's British Comedy Awards. The ceremony, hosted by Jonathan Ross, went ahead despite ITV pulling its plans to broadcast the awards live, and preventing other channels from airing the ceremony by paying a £700,000 blocking fee.

ITV “suspended” the broadcast after an investigation began when it emerged that viewers in the 2005 show were phoning in votes for the People’s Choice Award after Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway had already won.

Host Ross even quipped, "We don't know for sure if this will ever go out or not so if you win an award this year, like most of the telephone votes it doesn't really count and you will still be charged."

The one definite winner was Simon Pegg, who attended the bash wearing a classic silk tie. The Hot Fuzz actor did scoop an award on the night, taking home the coveted, Writers Guild Ronnie Barker Award.

Skinny tie and all

The humble necktie is finding renewed purpose outside of business hours.

Francois Marchand of the Edmonton Journal writes...

The Rat Pack knew what it was all about.

Sinatra, Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. - Vegas' classic days hip set - let it hang down long and skinny.

We're talking about ties, of course, and back in the day, you would have been hard-pressed to find anybody else who wore the skinny tie in such a cool, era-defining way.

Wearing a tie has always been a symbol of style...

Mourinho gaining fan support

Our current poll is gaining quite a bit of interest with the early front runner being ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. It seems that to our voters, the special one's style is unquestionable.

It also appears that a sizeable chunk of England football followers are backing Mourinho for his footballing credentials too. The website www.mourinhoforengland.co.uk has been set up in the hope of getting 100,000 names on a petition to present to the FA in a bid to show their support of Jose.

We will keep our eye out for www.stellingforengland.co.uk . Until then, keep voting for the boss you think deserves the tie!

Who will look best sporting the navy blue tie that goes with the esteemed England manager's job?

Wakefield, UK (November 28, 2007) - Tiesplanet.com

The hunt for a new England manager is well and truly on, and whilst everyone has an opinion on who should get the nod, specialist tie retailer Tiesplanet.com http://www.tiesplanet.com wants your vote on who would most look the part.

The national football boss traditionally wears a navy blue tie when on duty and with the modern coach's appearance on the touchline coming under as much scrutiny as their tactical nouse, then perhaps the man deemed to have the most style should get the post.

Tiesplanet.com's Andrew Bragg said: "It is argued by many nowadays that a manager's sheer charisma and presence on the touchline plays a large part in a team's success. Their clothing choice plays a big part in this.

We expect the ever-stylish Jose Mourinho to be a front runner in our poll, but it will be interesting to see who football fans think will look most at home in that famous navy blue tie."

The candidates named are:
  • Jose Mourinho
  • Fabio Capello
  • Harry Redknapp
  • Martin O'Neill
  • Alan Shearer
  • Jeff Stelling

McLeish loses the honour of the tie

It was surprising today to learn Alex McLeish had resigned from his post as Scotland international football manager, seemingly to join Birmingham City. Not because he has chosen to leave his home nation's top footballing post to take part in a Premier League relegation dogfight.

No, the reason we were shocked to see McLeish quit the international scene was that he will now no longer be able to wear his rather fetching Scotland tie (as seen in the picture). How he can leave this tie behind is anyone's guess.

Former Leeds United and Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister is favourite to be the next wearer of the magnificent tie. A tie similar is available here.

Necktie Paradox

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The necktie paradox is a puzzle or paradox within the subjectivistic interpretation of probability theory. It is a variation of the two envelope paradox.

Two men are each given a necktie by their wives as a Christmas present. Over drinks they start arguing over who has the more expensive necktie. They agree to have a wager over it. They will consult their wives and find out which necktie is the more expensive. The terms of the bet are that the man with the more expensive necktie has to give it to the other as a consolation prize.

The first man considers this: The probability of me winning or losing is 50:50. If I lose, then I lose the value of my necktie. If I win, then I win more than the value of my necktie. In other words, I can bet x and have a 50% chance of winning more than x. Therefore it is definitely in my interest to make the wager. The second man can consider the wager in exactly the same way; therefore, paradoxically, it is in both men's interest to wager their neckties.

Moral of the story? Buy the best quality tie for the cheapest price you can... we know a place!

McClaren loses tie after England dismissal

Steve McClaren yesterday, as expected, lost his job as England football manager. It is not our place to go into the rights and wrongs of this decision. One thing we did notice though (as we only we would) is the lack of a tie around McClaren's neck as he addressed the press following his dismissal.

What we find interesting about this is that throughout his tenure as England boss, McClaren always found it appropriate to wear a tie when addressing the media, watching games or attending functions. As soon as he is out of the esteemed post, he dons an open-neck shirt.

Concrete evidence, if ever you needed it, that the necktie is a symbol of power and prestige. McClaren may want to have an instant rethink and we would remind him of the old adage to 'dress for the job you want, not the job you have.'

A slide show featuring some of Steve McClaren's ties worn during his time as England manager can be seen here

Want to look like American Gangster star Denzel Washington?

Well, OK we can't help out too much, but if you want to look like Washington in his portrayal of Frank Lucas in blockbuster movie American Gangster, we recommend wearing a tie for a start-off.

We reckon Lucas would have worn designer brands and dark colours, so what about this one from Gieves & Hawkes

As for the film, you can read a review of it here

Terry Wogan Chooses Conservative Tie for Children In Need

Veteran anchorman Terry Wogan was always going to wear a tie to present Children in Need. A man of his experience and class would do nothing else.

However, we did wonder if he would opt for something a bit more outrageous for the show than the conservative navy blue offering he has served up. It is a smart tie to be fair, but perhaps something like this would have been a bit more eye-catching.

You can donate to Children in Need here

Northern Rock chief resigns

Northern Rock chief executive Adam Applegarth today resigned from the troubled bank.

Many investors in Northern Rock shares are sitting on huge losses as a result of the company's troubles.

This picture shows that despite Applegarth's reputation taking a battering he has still managed to keep up a smart image with this fetching tie and combination.

For anyone wanting to replicate this look, we can recommend this tie by Charles Hill in our new designer range.

City teachers to sport stylish clothes in Esquire spread

Who says teaching isn't glamorous?

Eight city public schoolteachers sporting designer duds grace a photo spread in Esquire magazine's upcoming "Best & Brightest" issue.

The young men were selected for the eight-page feature after Esquire asked every principal in the city to nominate a rising star from their school.

The distinction came as a shock to the teachers, who generally aren't outfitted Ralph Lauren ties.

Louis' and Sean's Ties are Same Difference on X-Factor

Same Difference may not be a favourite of Louis Walsh on X-Factor, but one thing they do agree on is the wearing of a smart black tie.

On tonight's show Walsh, 55 wore a regular width black silk tie with black shirt, whilst Sean Smith, 21 of brother/sister act, Same Difference wore a skinny black tie as part of his fashionable look. The duo performed their version of Scissor Sisters' hit 'I Don't Feel Like Dancin''

Host Dermot O' Leary completed the tie-wearing on tonight's show with a slim tie of his own.

Ties similar to those worn on the show can be seen here:

Jeff Stelling Wears Red Tie For FA Cup Weekend

Gilette Soccer Saturday anchorman Jeff Stelling chose to wear a plain red silk tie to host the show today.

Only one Premier League encounter kicked off at 3pm, but it is FA Cup 1st Round day and Stelling opted for seasonal red as his tie colour for the occasion.

Plain red ties are always a popular Christmas gift as gift buyers want to give a present in the festive spirit, without opting for a novelty tie.

Wayne Rooney To Miss Croatia Tie

Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney is set to miss four weeks of action thanks to an ankle injury sustained in training on Friday. Bad news all round. Well maybe not quite so bad for Blackburn Rovers and Croatia, who now don't have to face the Liverpool-born youngster in their respective upcoming clashes.

Anyway, enough of the boring stuff. The question is whether Wayne will turn up for the Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers Premier League contest on Sunday. And if so, will he wear his tie whilst watching from the stands. One thing's for sure, his manager will be. Alex Ferguson, the Premier League's most successful and long-serving manager wears a tie whenever his side are in action.

Go on Wayne, be a good lad and follow your mentor's lead.

Duncan Bannatyne Smartens Up For Dragons' Den

The latest series of Dragons' Den is now in full swing on BBC Two. In fairness, not much as changed. James Caan has joined the team of potential investors, but the one major difference we have seen (and for the better we hasten to add) is the addition of a garment around the neck of Duncan Bannatyne.

Bannatyne, who in previous series' has sported an open neck shirt, has been wearing a tie for the fifth season. A clip can be seen here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/broadband/mediaplayer/players/bbc2/bb_wm_console.shtml?redirect=console.shtml&lang=en&nbram=1&nbwm=1&bbwm=1&bbram=1&package=4588699&clip=s5ep4_preview

Doesn't he look a smart dragon?

Full marks to Peter Jones too, who has worn a silk tie every episode of Dragons' Den he has appeared in.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown talks to British troops at their base in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, 550 kilometers (340 miles) southeast of Baghdad, October 2, 2007. Steve McClaren - Forgiven

We gave Steve McClaren's choice of tie a bit of slating here, but it has to be said during the last two England international football matches, the boss has worn smart navy blue silk ties.

A tie similar to the one McClaren wore for the Israel and Russia Euro 2008 qualifying games at Wembley is shown in the image and is available here: http://www.tiesplanet.com/navy-blue-multi-rib-silk-tie-26-p.asp

England Rugby Union World Cup Chances Compromised?

England's rugby union squad jetted off to France today for the 2007 World Cup. And on the day former captain Lawrence Dallaglio hinted at a drop in standards by the English RFU since the last tournament, the defending champions posed for photos at Heathrow Airport without a certain something they had last time.

The World Cup Trophy? Well, they couldn't have won that yet to be fair.

A great coach or captain? That is open to debate.

Ties? You are correct. The national rugby union team, representing our great nation appeared wearing open neck shirts. Premier Tie League Update

Sorry to have left you all in suspense since last weekend's Premier League matches, but here are the results of Saturday and Sunday's games.

Chris Hutchings (Tie) 3 - 0 Roy Keane (Tie)

Martin Jol (No tie) 4 - 0 Billy Davies (Tie)

Steve Coppell (Tie) 1 - 0 David Moyes (No tie)

Harry Redknapp (Tie) 3 - 1 Sammy Lee (Tie)

Sam Allardyce (Tie) 0 - 0 Martin O' Neill (No Tie)

Lawrie Sanchez (Tie) 1-2 Gareth Southgate (Tie)

Steve Bruce (No tie) 0-1 Alan Curbishley (No tie)

Sven Goran Eriksson (Tie) 1 - 0 Alex Ferguson (Tie)

Rafa Benitez (Tie) 1 - 1 Jose Mourinho (Tie)

Mark Hughes (Tie) 1 - 1 Arsene Wenger (Tie)

An even weekend in matches between tie-wearing bosses versus non-tie wearing managers. Steve Coppell earned a good victory for the ties with a terrific 1-0 victory over early-season form team Everton.

We highlighted Sven Goran Eriksson's nice blue tie earlier in the season. We like it a lot and it appears to be bringing the Swede a great deal of luck as his Manchester City outfit stand top of the Premier League after 3 weeks.

Another interesting weekend of fixtures await us. Will any tracksuit managers change their look? We shall see tie lovers, we shall see.

Even Stevens In Midweek Premier League Tie Battles

Only one Premier League match saw a tie wearing manager taking on a tracksuit-sporting boss, midweek. A last minute Stern John strike for Sunderland meant necktie sporting Roy Keane's Sunderland took a point from St. Andrews, where Birmingham boss Steve Bruce didn't even don a tie for his post-match interview. Very disappointing Steve.

The full midweek results were:

Martin Jol (No tie) 1 - 3 David Moyes (No tie)

Steve Bruce (No tie) 2 - 2 Roy Keane (Tie)

Lawrie Sanchez (Tie) 2 - 1 Sammy Lee (Tie)

Sven Goran Eriksson (Tie) 1 - 0 Billy Davies (Tie)

Harry Redknapp (Tie) 1 - 1 Alex Ferguson (Tie)

Steve Coppell (Tie) 1 - 2 Jose Mourinho (Tie)

Chris Hutchings (Tie) 1 - 0 Gareth Southgate (Tie)

11 from 14 bosses chose to wear ties during play midweek. Also, we take a minor victory in David Moyes' Everton winning at Spurs as he did put on a tie for his after-match TV interviews. Now get that tie on during the game, Dave!

Premier League Managers Tie Up Victories

The Barclays Premier League football season 2007/2008 kicked off this weekend with the usual first day flurry of goals and excitement.

The top flight's managers had smartened up for day one with 15 out of the 20 bosses wearing ties as they bellowed their instructions from the touchline. (75% of the population can't be wrong). Steve Bruce, Alan Curbishley, Martin O'Neill, David Moyes and Martin Jol, you are named and shamed as not wearing ties. *Hiss* *Boo*

Well, we are sure you all know the match results by now, but what about the outcome of the ties vs tracksuits? Here they are in full:

Martin O'Neill (No tie) 1 - 2 Rafa Benitez (Tie)

Sammy Lee (Tie) 1 - 3 Sam Allardyce (Tie)

Billy Davies (Tie) 2 - 2 Harry Redknapp (Tie)

David Moyes (No tie) 2 - 1 Chris Hutchings (Tie)

Gareth Southgate (Tie) 1 - 2 Mark Hughes (Tie)

Roy Keane (Tie) 1 - 0 Martin Jol (No Tie)

Alan Curbishley (No Tie) 0 - 2 Sven Goran Eriksson (Tie)

Arsene Wenger (Tie) 2 - 1 Lawrie Sanchez (Tie)

Jose Mourinho (Tie) 3 - 2 Steve Bruce (No Tie)

Alex Ferguson (Tie) 0 - 0 Steve Coppell (Tie)

Only one victory for a tracksuit manager, with four victories for tie wearers over their scruffier counterparts. Fine victories for Roy Keane's Sunderland and Sven Goran Eriksson's Manchester City. (Proof we feel that tie wearers are winners.)

Ice cool swede Sven wore the pick of the ties this weekend with a simple plain blue tie similar to the one pictured below.

Royal Ascot - Men's Ties Steal The Show On Ladies' Day

It may have been Ladies' Day at the Royal Ascot today, but of greater note to us was the fantastic array of ties on show from the gentlemen.

June 22nd saw the third day of the event at Ascot Racecourse. The Royal Ascot has been one of the highlights of the racing and social calendar since 1711, and the royal patronage continues today with a Royal Procession taking place in front of the grandstands daily.

Male racehorse owners, trainers, racegoers and royalty alike shared both their passion for racing and the elegance of a well-tied necktie on Day 3 of this years meet. Classic plain ivory, gold and silver ties were prominent as always. Extravagant patterns were also on show though, including on Dubai ruler, Sheikh Mohammed who sported a particularly elaborate design as he watched his horse, Silkwood take the Ribblesdale Stakes.

One man we do recommend takes a look at Tiesplanet.com is England football boss, Steve McClaren, who opted to wear a rather dated navy blue striped tie for his day at the races.

Silk ties are available from Tiesplanet.com, including the handmade woven silk horse racing novelty tie (pictured) priced at £14.99.

Thankfully, we don't stock any ties as bad as Borat's, but our selection can be viewed at: http://www.tiesplanet.com.

Putin gets red carpet reception from US ally Saudi Arabia... Whilst Wearing A Tie

RIYADH (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin will wrap up his first visit to Saudi Arabia, which has put the seal on the improving ties between Moscow and a key US ally in the Middle East.

The oil-rich Muslim kingdom, a staunch Cold War ally of Washington, has rolled out the red carpet for Putin, whose country's oil output is exceeded only by regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia.

In talks Sunday, King Abdullah described the Russian president, who is on a three-nation tour to boost energy and military ties, as "a stateman, a man of peace, a man of justice".
Putin described himself as a "loyal friend" of the Muslim kingdom and said the two countries could do much to bolster ties.
