Why The Telegraph Thinks Ties Are Essential

A piece by Iain Martin in The Telegraph highlights why men should maintain high standards of dress.

Martin writes:

"This is the main mistake often made by those who declare formality, and in particular the tie, dead. They assume that it is about self, when it isn’t. Wearing a jacket and tie for work, or complying properly with a dress code as a guest, is about respect for others. At issue is not what the wearer wants. What matters are his customers, colleagues or voters."

So there you have it - long live the tie!

Tie-less Paxman Ridiculed

Today's press has attacked the BBC's Jeremy Paxman for not wearing a tie. This article in the Daily Mail was particularly scathing:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2226042/Jeremy-Paxman-tie-This-BBC-man-plainly-going-mid-life-crisis.html

The Daily Mail even goes as far as saying that Paxman has 'lost his dignity' by revealing his 'old-lizard neck'. It says that he is at least 8 years late to the 'no-ties party' which has seen presenters move slowly towards the Jimmy Savile shell suit look.

Of course, the release of Skyfall, the latest Bond film, has reignited debate over the wearing of ties. At Ties Planet we have always maintained that a tie or other neckwear is essential when trying to look your best and it appears that current trendsetters agree with us. The 'no-ties party' is no longer the place to be, not that we were ever on the guest list anyway!

Ties for Girls Too

The Tightrope singer Janelle Monae is the latest face of CoverGirl.  The new campaign for the cosmetics company will debut in the September issue of U.S. Vogue.  Janelle wears bright and bold red lipstick in the image, along with a suit, shirt and last but not least... a skinny tie.

This Daily Mail article shows the image and will no doubt inspire many girls to try on a tie too!

First Euro 2012 Tie Kicking Off Soon

We are just over 24 hours away from the start of Euro 2012.

Although football is top of the agenda, style is also a prominent feature of the build up to any major tournament and things have been no different this time around. Most amusingly, Mario Balotelli got a slap around the head from Italian team-mate Thiago Motta when he tried to rearrange his tie for him. That's a warning not to mess with a well-dressed Italian's tie without being invited!

We know it is difficult to keep your hands off such a fine garment Mario, so why not buy ties to your satisfaction at Ties Planet!

Followers of this blog will know that we previously selected Manchester City as winners of the 2011/12 Premier League, based on the closest tie to match their club colours. Look out for our Euro 2012 selection very soon!

Tory MP Sorry After Novelty Tie Breaks Into Speech

Online retailer Ties Planet has offered to help MPs compete with Tory Nadhim Zahawi when it comes to neckwear.

The MP for Stratford on Avon’s musical tie burst into a tune lasting around 20 seconds as he spoke at a debate on the Educational Maintenance Allowance in England.

Labour rival George Howarth wittily began his own speech by saying:

“Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to compete with the honourable gentleman with regards our respective ties!”.

However, this may not be true for much longer as Leeds-based Ties Planet has offered all MPs a 25% discount on tie orders until the end of the current tax year.

Managing Director Andrew Bragg commented:

“With MPs coming under close scrutiny over their pay and expenses we thought it would be a good idea to give them a break for once!”

One person who found the incident far from amusing was Deputy Speaker Dawn Primarolo, who snapped:
“Perhaps next time the honourable gentleman will be more selective in the ties he wears in the chamber and then we won't need the musical accompaniment.”

The MP for Morley and Outwood, the constituency where Ties Planet is based, is the high profile Ed Balls. The company is also located within minutes of Dewsbury, birthplace of Conservative Co-Chairman Sayeeda Warsi.

Stylish Barcelona Tie Up Treble With Champions League Win

La Liga champions Barcelona claimed an unprecedented treble as they lifted the Champions League trophy in Rome this evening. The Spanish giants who had already tied up a cup and league double outclassed Manchester United for long periods of European football's showpiece event.

As promised yesterday we kept a close eye on the neckwear of Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola. As expected the veteran Manchester United boss Ferguson wore club tie with traditional suit. Guardiola opted for a rather fetching floral patterned tie as he watched his team triumph in Rome.

Guardiola may have come out on top in footballing terms, but we'd say the tie battle was a score draw!

Who do you think of when it comes to male style icons? David Beckham? Brad Pitt? Perhaps even US President Barack Obama?

Well, think again because esteemed fashion magazine Esquire has awarded Prince Charles the title of 'Most Fashionable Man in the World'. Ignoring those who follow trends, the style bible has opted to crown the Prince of Wales thanks to his polished looks. Rarely his Charles seen without double-breasted suit, shirt, tie and polished shoes.

Dress Like Sean Penn

Sean Penn walked away with Best Male Actor from this week's Oscars. Penn fought off competition from bookies' favourite Mickey Rourke to win the gong for his performance in the Gus Van Sant-directed movie, Milk.

Whilst Penn and his fellow Hollywood stars soaked up the glitzy ceremony, we were keeping an eye on the ties the fellows were wearing. As you can probably imagine, there weren't too many variations on the plain black tie or plain black bow tie.

Not to worry though, as the main man Sean Penn wore a tie with a subtle difference. Penn's narrow tie had a self-stripe to it adding a lovely texture to his outfit.

Want a tie much like Penn's? Try our Semi-Plain Black 7cm Skinny Tie!

Beckham Looking To Tie Up Future in Milan?

After making his AC Milan home debut in the San Siro on Saturday evening David Beckham looked like he was dressed to impress on Sunday.

Alongside other celebrities including Kelly Brook and Danny Cipriani, Beckham watched on in awe at the Emporio Armani Menswear Fashion Show in the former England captain's latest adopted city, Milan.

Beckham looked sharp in black suit, white shirt and narrow black tie. We can only speculate as to who he was trying to impress, but just maybe he is looking to secure a permanent move to the famous Milan club, where is he on loan until March.

Want Beckham's look? We can help with the tie at least... We have a slimline black tie available priced at £9.99.

Fashion Tips from Ken Dodd!

Yes, veteran comedian Ken Dodd has recently aired his views on ties, claiming, “I’ve got hundreds of ties and even wear one going to bed. They’re the last stranglehold of men’s fashion sense."

Dodd just can't understand politicians over 40 years of age not wearing ties either. “It’s like they are trying to be 21 again.” A sentiment we share very much.

And Ken's final fashion tip... “Ties and training shoes don’t go either – you have to walk around with your shirt hanging out.” This we're not in total agreement with as we have seen many a cool dude sporting trainers and skinny tie, but it just great to see someone who cares about ties! Nice one Ken!

Know someone who is clinging onto their youth by not wearing a tie to work? Let him know it is time to see the light by buying him a tie for Christmas from Tiesplanet.com!

X-Factor - 'Piano Tie Tony' Is Back

X-Factor fanatics may remember 2005 auditionee, Anthony Little. Name doesn't ring a bell? Well, he was more famously known as 'Piano Tie Tony' due to his choice of neckwear for the ITV show audition.

'Piano Tie Tony' wore a rather distinctive white jacket and piano tie on the show in 2005. This didn't help him get through to the next round though, resulting in an argument between Anthony and judge Simon Cowell. Little told the music mogul, “(he) had made the wrong decision and that he should change his mind”, to no avail.

Imagine Cowell's shock when Anthony walked through the X-Factor audition doors again this year... again wearing the piano tie! Little did take the tie off before he performed this time round, but again did not make it past the first stage.

You can read the full story here.

Now that 'Piano Tie Tony' has become simply 'Tony', if you like his tie, then maybe you could offer to buy it from him.

Alternatively, we have ties very much like the one he wore... Ties Planet Tie like 'Piano Tie Tony's'

Brown and Mowbray are Best Dressed Premier League New Boys

We have taken a keen interest in the managers new to the English Premier League over the first couple of weeks of the new season.

Paul Ince, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Tony Pulis, Phil Brown and Tony Mowbray are all managing in England's top flight for the first time, and whilst their respective club's fans are all eager to find out how they fare in the big league, we have been monitoring how they have fared in the fashion stakes.

Here is how they have ranked over the first two games of the new campaign:

Luiz Felipe Scolari 1/10 - 'Big Phil' gets one point for a well honed moustache, but his attire has not really been up to scratch so far. Scolari has worn full tracksuit in the baking sun of Chelsea's first two games, a look he looks likely to adopt all season-long. We certainly don't expect to see him in suit and tie anytime soon.

Paul Ince 7/10 - The new Blackburn Rovers boss would be on 10/10 had he chosen not to wear a tie for his side's second outing of the season at home to Hull City. He wore smart suit and tie for Rovers' opening day win at Goodison Park, but opted to go without the tie for the draw with Hull City last weekend. Moral of the story? The tie brought you luck Paul.

Phil Brown 9/10 - Hull City's surprisingly good start to the season has coincided with Brown looking rather dapper in both their opening encounters. Sam Allardyce's former assistant has worn a nice orange and black club tie for the matches against Fulham and Blackburn.

Tony Pulis -1/10 - We never expected Pulis to be there in the style-stakes this season, but for him to wear a baseball cap for his side's games has left him with a minus score!

Tony Mowbray 9/10 - Mowbray's start to the season has been much smarter than his side's. West Bromwich Albion may have kicked off the campaign with two losses, but their boss has looked sharp during both games. Mowbray has worn a nice traditional navy blue and white striped tie on both occasions.
